Skootik – Academic assistant for early detection of school drop-out
Skootik
Sector: Academic activities
Business Case
Today, all universities have a platform for teaching support. This platform allows communication with students and sharing of content such as assignments, homework and tests. In addition, it allows each student’s grades to be tracked, and monitoring of both academic performance and student use of the platform can give clues about their degree of motivation, as well as the risk of dropping out.
Objetivos
Today, all universities have a platform for teaching support. This platform allows communication with students and sharing of content such as assignments, homework and tests. In addition, it allows each student’s grades to be tracked, and monitoring of both academic performance and student use of the platform can give clues about their degree of motivation, as well as the risk of dropping out.
Use case
A system is proposed that ingests information about student interaction on the university platform and parses the academic performance of students from the PDFs in which the grades are found. All this information is organised in a single dataset and a classifier model is set to assess whether the student in question is at risk of dropping out or not.
Infraestructura
It is a Cloud-based service, so a server is provided to host the system along with a platform for user interaction with the data and a system for ingesting and preprocessing the client’s data.
Tecnologías utilizadas
Automatic or Deep Learning
Datos utilizados
Private university data, both on platform usage and student grades.
Recursos utilizados
A back-end person to implement the entire ingestion system and the classification model, and a front-end person for the development and management of the platform.
Dificultades y aprendizaje
The most complicated point was the data imbalancing: since (fortunately) school dropout is very low, it is difficult to establish a regular pattern that characterises this risk.
KPIs (impacto en el negocio y métricas del modelo)
The impact on the business is clear, as it allows teachers to be alerted about the students’ academic development, as well as their motivation with respect to their studies and their degree of involvement in them.
